Debating the Family Leave/Social Security Connection

Despite revenue neutrality, there are pros and cons associated with the concept of using Social Security to finance family leave. As a reform measure, it’s a pretty substantial redirection of thought in a world of tradition, and it will require extensive analysis even before proposals are put on the table. While now, in the face of Social Security’s larger issue–the solvency dilemma–there are bigger fish to fry, may not be the time to move toward this type of shift, it’s clear that the family-leave issue could likely emerge as a serious topic in the not-too-distant future, so now’s the time to begin the debate.
