Did Politicians Steal Social Security Money?

It’s a nearly constant myth we hear at The AMAC Foundation – that Social Security’s financial woes have been caused by greedy politicians who stole the money to use for other nefarious purposes. We’ve written and published articles debunking this myth and answered too many emails to count in attempting to dispel this widely held misconception, but it still comes up regularly. The reality is that no politician – not President Johnson, President Kennedy nor President Reagan (the supposed “culprits” most often blamed), nor Congress nor any politician has ever taken a dime of Social Security’s money. They can’t. The Social Security Trust Funds are protected by law to be available only for Social Security purposes. In an article which exhibits his frustration on this topic, renowned Social Security columnist Tom Margenau once more tries to dispel the persistent myth that politicians have stolen Social Security funds.
