Federal agencies trying to move away from Social Security number as ID

Though they’ve been wrestling with the problem for nearly a decade, agencies of the Federal Government are trying to find ways to find an alternative to using the Social Security Number (SSN) as a way to identify Americans, without exposing them to identify theft.  The struggle seems to be finding an identification system that works equally well in the face of inadequate funding, outdated technology and lack of a coordinated approach and guidance by the Office of Management and Budget.  The House Oversight Committee is now exploring this issue, as this fedscoop.com article by Cassandra Stephenson explains.  Click here to read more
