Getting a new Social Security card

Many parents get a Social Security number and card for their children while they are very young, even as an infant. And that’s a good thing, because the one’s Social Security Number (or “SSN”) will be needed for many things in life, including opening a bank account and getting a job. But there are circumstances when it’s necessary to get a new card from the Social Security Administration, either because one was never issued to you as a child or has since become lost or damaged. Fortunately, that a relatively easy thing to do by using Form SS-5, which you can obtain either online at www.ssa.gov, or by visiting your local Social Security office.
