Getting married changes your benefit status
As you probably know, Social Security benefits extend to the survivors of a deceased beneficiary who was collecting retirement benefits. That includes dependent children under the age of 18 (or 19 if still in school), as well as adult unmarried children who are disabled with a disability that started before age 22. But getting married changes that dependent’s status, which means they will lose any Social Security survivor’s benefits they are collecting, and may even lose any Supplemental Security Income (SSI) they were receiving.
