Hoffman, Haine Burn Bill Passes

On Saturday, the Illinois Senate passed a measure sponsored by State Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton) and Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea) that offers severely or fatally injured burn victims immediate relief by cutting the red tape of disability benefits….The act, also called the George Bailey Memorial Program, provides that burn victims who have been given less than 18 months to live will immediately receive the 5 months’ pay he or she would have received for Social Security had there not been a mandatory 5-month waiting period….Currently, under the Social Security Act, there is a mandatory 5-month waiting period applied to Social Security Disability Income claims. A disabled person may only receive payments beginning on the sixth month after their injury. This bill would remove that waiting period for severely injured burn victims. Read more…
