I am pleased to be here today to discuss our work examining fraud in theMedicare program. n1 We have designated Medicare as a high-risk program since 1990, in part because we found the program’s size and complexity make it vulnerable to fraud, waste, and abuse. n2 Although there have been convictions for multimillion-dollar schemes that defrauded the Medicareprogram, the extent of the problem is unknown. n3 There are no reliable estimates of the extent of fraud in the Medicare program or for the health care industry as a whole.
