Most people believe that when they claim their Social Security benefit, the amount they receive is sacrosanct and unaffected by outside forces. But you may be surprised to find that your Social Security benefits can, indeed, be affected in what this article describes as “sneaky” ways. For example, if you claim benefits early (before your full retirement age) you are subject to an earnings limit, which will take away some of your benefits if you work and exceed the limit. And if your income from all sources (including half of your Social Security benefits) exceeds a specific threshold for your tax filing status, some of your Social Security benefits will become taxable income.
