Q & A

I stayed with the same Part D plan I had last year, and my drugs all stayed the same. Why am I paying a higher co-pay for one of them this year?

Answer: This could be caused by a few different scenarios: First, drugs can shift between tiers. First check what tier that drug was classified as last year, and compare it to what tier it is classified as this year. Different tiers have different co-pays. Second, It could be that the co-pay or co-insurance was raised from what it was last year. Co-pays are fixed amounts. $10 for example as opposed to 10 percent. Co-insurance is what you pay, but as a percentage – 10 percent as opposed to $10. If you have a percentage co-pay, you may find that what you pay for the drug fluctuates as drug prices can and often do change. A third explanation could be that the drug was covered last year, and has been dropped off the formulary (list of covered drugs) for this year. If you are not able to resolve the question by these explanations, you can simply call your Part D carrier and ask. A customer service representative should be able to easily pull up that drug and explain the difference to you.
