If you rely on Social Security alone in your retirement, you may not like the number you see

According to a recent Gallup poll, 57 percent of retirees rely on Social Security as their major source of income, while only 33 percent of near-retirees say they expect Social Security to be their major source of income once they retire. So, if you’re planning to retire on just Social Security, the average monthly benefit starting January 2022 will be $1,657 or $19,884 a year. For a married couple planning on retiring on only Social Security, your monthly income might be around $2,753 or $33,036 a year. If you plan on living a frugal lifestyle during your retirement, you may be able to survive on the numbers listed above, but for most seniors, these numbers will fall short.
