Immigration & Social Security’s Funding Crisis - AMAC & CNBC

Social Security and Medicare are important issues to voters 50+, and many cast ballots based on them. Lorie Konish of CNBC writes a comprehensive piece here noting that illegal immigration does not play any significant role in the looming insolvency of America’s entitlement programs, mainly because it is difficult for undocumented persons to access these benefits, as they are not lawfully entitled to them. Stealing benefits is difficult; it requires tapping into someone’s Social Security account and changing their bank information to access funds. There have been cases of undocumented immigrants found to be misusing Social Security numbers to fraudulently access benefits. But Konish quotes expert Andrew Biggs, who notes the large number of baby boomers retiring and living longer are the real culprits for Social Security and Medicare’s woes. Full article here.
