In the late 1970s, big companies generally had pension plans for their workers; between the pension and Social Security benefits, an individual was guaranteed a “traditional” retirement. But the times they are a-changing, many companies did away with pension plans and replaced them with 401(k), 403(b), etc., putting the onus on the worker to save for their retirement, and more workers view retirement as a time of adventure. However, the financial services industry’s focus on retirement in the “traditional” sense continues even though it’s simply not possible or even desirable for many Americans.
