Is your Social Security Benefit Amount Correct? - The Motley Fool
You should verify your Social Security earnings statement each year. Your retirement benefit is based on your 35 highest-earning years, and your earnings through age 60 have been adjusted for inflation. This means they are worth more now than when you earned them. This adjusted amount is not shown on your Social Security earnings statement, but it is based on your earnings at the time. If earnings are missing or lower than what you earned, so is your benefit.
The easiest way to confirm your earnings statement each year is to use your My Social Security Account online. If you do not have one, click here… to create your account.
If you think your benefit amount is incorrect, call Social Security and request a recomputation of your benefit amount. Have your earnings history and any new details that may affect your benefits. Call SSA at (800) 772-213 or visit your local office.
Keith Speights has written an article in The Motley Fool about three steps you can take to check if your benefit amount is correct. The SSA processes millions of payments, so unfortunately, clerical errors can occur. To read his full article, click here ….
