Medicare Advantage vs. “original Medicare” and “Medigap” - NY Times

Managing healthcare costs in retirement can be a daunting task. And no less daunting is how to chose between “original Medicare” provided by the federal government and “Medicare Advantage” provided by private insurers. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to both: Original Medicare usually requires a supplemental “Medigap” plan, at additional cost, to provide adequate healthcare coverage. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage may provide more services for less, but requires beneficiaries to use in-network providers and may require pre-approval of certain healthcare services.
