More Seniors Are Continuing to Work After Receiving Their Social Security Benefits - Asian Journal Newsroom - Life & Style

As the average life expectancy increases and the cost of living continues to rise, the workforce is aging. According to the article by the Asian Journal Newsroom,  research shows that approximately 40% of Seniors are continuing to work after starting to receive their Social Security benefits.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2024, 19.5% continued to stay in the workforce, while 38.3% reduced their employment to part-time. Social Security allows you to continue to work after you start collecting your benefits. The earnings limit for someone under their full retirement age (FRA) in 2025 is $23,400 annually. If you go over the annual limit, Social Security will withhold $1 for every $2 you exceed it.  The first year of taking your benefits, you have the option to exclude all your earnings before you start your benefits, by using the monthly limit of $1,950 in 2025. However, if you go over the monthly limit by so much as $1, Social Security will want the full payment for that month back. The new annual limit for 2026 is $24,480, and the monthly limit is $2,040.

In the year you reach your FRA, the annual earnings limit for 2025 is $62,160. If you go over this limit, Social Security will withhold $1 for every $3. The monthly limit is $5,180.
