Not a bad deal for low-wage earners

In his op-ed column on Jan. 16, “Government takes from the poor, gives to the rich,” E.J. Dionne restated a common, somewhat misleading claim: “It’s entirely true that ‘better-off people’ pay more in federal taxes than the ‘less well-to-do.’ But this leaves out Social Security taxes.” Payments into Social Security really should not be considered a “tax” but would best be characterized as a forced savings-and-insurance plan.
