Paper checks slated to cease in a few months - U.S. News & World Report

The roughly half million Social Security beneficiaries still receiving paper checks will be required to convert to an alternative by September 30 to comply with President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) 14247. The Executive Order, titled “Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account,” requires that paper-based payments from the Federal Government be transitioned to digital payments, either through direct deposit or use of a Direct Express debit card. In describing the motivation behind EO 14247, industry experts have cited the increased level of security, cost savings, and governmental efficiency improvements expected to result from the change.

In preparation for the changeover, Social Security Administration (SSA) officials have been actively communicating the steps that recipients need to take in advance of the September 30 date. Notifications have been issued, and outreach efforts have been made to promote widespread understanding of the options available.

Newsweek reporter Suzanne Blake recaps the scope of this processing modification in a post on their website (access it here). As her article notes, the change will involve Social Security retirement benefits, disability payments (SSDI), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.
