Paper Social Security Checks Are Changing to Electronic Payments Soon - Yshoo! Finance

The Social Security Administration is changing how benefits are paid for about half a million beneficiaries. About 520,000 people, who now receive their monthly Social Security payment by a paper check received in the mail, will need to switch to electronic payments after September 2025. This is a cost cutting measure by the SSA, affecting less than 1% of benefit recipients. The SSA has required all new beneficiaries to use electronic payment means for about a dozen years now, so this change is consistent with current rules. Henceforth, all SS payments must be made using either direct deposit to your bank account, or payment using a prepaid debit card called “Direct Express.” However, the SSA has set up a special access number to assist those who have difficulty with this change if it will cause a hardship. In hardship cases, a recipient can request a waiver by contacting Social Security at 855-290-1545. All of this is explained in this Yahoo! Finance article by Kerry Hannon. Click here to learn more.
