Social Security Disability – a lifeline fraught with problems

Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is designed to provide a lifeline of income to workers who become disabled and unable to earn for a year or more.  As with any insurance policy, you pay premiums in the form of a small percentage (1.185%) within the FICA tax that is withheld from your earnings.  But the SSDI program suffers from painfully long waiting periods, sometimes measured in years, before those benefits can begin flowing.  The program needs to be fixed, according to Jim Allsup, CEO of a national disability services organization, in this article appearing at thehill.com.  Click here to read more.
