Social Security Misunderstandings and the Openness to Change - Reason.com

Reason.com contributing editor J.D. Tuccille, in a post on their website, examines one of the popular ironies facing Social Security in the 21st Century. He finds a paradox in the fact that most Americans like Social Security, but do not understand how it works or why it’s facing insolvency. Another ironic view, he suggests, is that while Americans are enthusiastic about Social Security, they are worried about its future.

In his post, Tuccille discusses some of the major misconceptions, along with the thoughts of younger workers on changes that could be considered to shore up Social Security’s finances for future generations. Tuccille arguably labels Social Security as a “hot mess,” while rightfully noting that “Americans seem to be bracing themselves for necessary reform.” On that point, Congress needs to focus strong attention on the clock for Social Security’s looming insolvency problem, a fact most of us agree with. In any event, read the Tuccille post in full here for his viewpoints on the matter.
