Social Security Outlines Veterans Statistics - SSA.gov

In preparation for the upcoming Veterans Day Holiday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) yesterday published a recap of the program’s service to the Veteran community. SSA notes that the Veteran population encompasses more than 8.5 million beneficiaries, or about 15.4% of all adult beneficiaries. The information included in the SSA post presented additional information about the characteristics of the Veteran beneficiary community, including:

  • average monthly benefits paid to Veterans exceed the averages for non-Veterans across all age groupings, with Veterans as a total group receiving about a 7.5% higher benefit
  • correspondingly, the Veteran community has a lower percentage of beneficiaries falling below 100% of the federal poverty line
  • Vietnam War Veterans comprise the largest grouping of Veteran beneficiaries, at about 4.5 million or more than half of the Veteran beneficiary population
