Social Security Scam Warning

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is issuing a warning about callers claiming to be from the SSA who declare your Social Security accounts have been suspended due to suspicion of illegal activity.  It may be a real live person or a robocaller.  The caller then says that if you fail to resolve the issue by calling back a certain phone number, your assets will be frozen.  The information sought includes your Social Security number, your mother’s maiden name, your date of birth and your bank account numbers.  Any could be used for identity theft.  This latest scam follows on the heels of one from a few years ago that used a highly official-looking email address, “no-reply@ssa.gov,” and asked recipients to click on a link to receive augmented protection for their benefits.  Those who receive the scam call are urged to hang up and then to report it to the SSA.  Scams involving people who claim to be from the SSA are frequent enough that the SSA has a Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.  Read more from this Motley Fool/USA Today piece here.
