Social Security should be a big issue in presidential election

Social Security is at a crossroads, with the mother of all government programs facing some hard choices and potentially a bumpy road ahead. Despite its high profile as an issue, few of the hordes of candidates already hotly pursuing the nomination for next year’s presidential election want to talk about the “third rail” of politics. A recent Associated Press story laid out the current state and potential future of the two main Social Security trust funds — retirement and disability. Things don’t look too promising, but they are not beyond repair.
