Social Security Strategies for Married Couples

Finding an optimum Social Security claiming strategy is hard enough for a single person, but even more difficult for a married couple. Married partners are well advised to coordinate their individual claiming so as to maximize their benefits as a couple, not an easy task considering that each will have different personal SS benefits and one spouse may – or many not – be eligible for additional benefits from the other. And not to be lost in the planning, a lower earning spouse’s benefit as a survivor will be based upon the amount their spouse was receiving at death, so the age at which the higher earning spouse claims also affects benefits for their widow(er).
