Social Security's Financial Problems Surfacing in Midterm Debates, Finally - Scripps News

It may be a case of too little, too late, but the final days of the 2026 midterm elections seem to be giving at least some attention to Social Security's looming financial catastrophe. It may also be a case of the calendar dawning on senatorial candidates, since the “cliff” facing this huge senior support program will arrive within the next six years.
No matter the reason for it, Social Security’s problem seems to be emerging as a “sleeper” issue in various debates, as noted in a video accompanying a post by Scripps News’ Chief Washington Correspondent Joe St. George. The St. George post summarizes the insolvency issue and explains potential steps being considered to deal with insolvency, and illustrates remarks from several candidates during campaign presentations concerning the issue.
The St. George Post also discusses congressional action on a similar Social Security financial crisis over four decades ago.
