Some SSA employees offered reassignment (with conditions) - Government Executive

There is little doubt the the Trump Administration’s new initiative to streamline the federal government, with the new DOGE (Dept. of Government Efficiency) as the lead agency, has caused a fair amount of angst among government employees. To this point, the Social Security Administration had avoided DOGE’s intense scrutiny – that is, until notice was received yesterday that 41 probationary employees must accept reassignment or be terminated. This notice was especially troubling considering that Social Security gets about 10,000 new applicants per day, at a time when staffing is at a 50 year low. To date, DOGE has indicated that the potential impact to Social Security would be limited to fraud and error detection, so the notice of pending staff reassignments hit somewhat by surprise, as discussed in this Government Executive article by Erich Wagner.
