Most advisors, present company included, often advise delaying your claim for Social Security benefits as long as possible so that you can get a higher monthly amount. But, most advisors will also concede that there are certain situations when claiming your benefits early is exactly the right decision. Sure, if you don’t need the money right away and expect to live to a ripe old age, waiting longer to claim is often your best choice. But if you need the money now to prevent full depletion of your retirement savings, or if your health is poor and you’re not sure of your longevity, then claiming earlier trumps waiting longer. The fact is, everyone’s circumstances are different and should be carefully evaluated, especially if you are married and your spouse is eligible for benefits from your work record.
