SSA Warns of New Scam Technique - NewsNation

There is no shortage of nefarious individuals seeking to gain access to your money, and your Social Security benefit is an inviting target for these cyber criminals. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has warned SS beneficiaries of a new technique being used by scammers to impersonate a representative of the SSA to gain access to your benefits. These scammers use sophisticated techniques to make their communication with you seem authentic, so it is extremely important that you understand these warning signs provided by the SSA: red flags include requesting payment by gift card, prepaid debit card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, cash or gold; email messages claiming your Social Security statement is ready to download; embedded links or attachments labeled as statements or documents; messages creating urgency or pressure to act immediately.

Always be suspicious of any email address that does not end in “.gov” and, if in doubt, just call SSA at 1.800.772.1213 to check the status of your account. Learn all about SSA’s guidance to avoid scams at this NEWSNATION article by Jeremy Tanner.
