Student Loans and Social Security

Lawmakers are currently fighting to introduce a bill that would put a stop to the garnishment of Social Security benefits that go to paying off outstanding federal student loan debts. This has been allowed since 1996 with a law put in to affect by Clinton. In 2014 alone, $161 million was withheld from benefits in order to pay student loan debts. To read more about this, visit this article with NJ Today.
