Taking Your Social Security Benefits Before Your FRA and Continuing to Work - The Globe and Mail

If you were born in 1960 or later, your full retirement age (FRA) is 67. If you are working and take your benefits early, you will be subject to an earnings limit. If you go over the earnings limit for the year, it could affect the number of benefits that you receive.

The earnings limit for 2026 is $24,480. If you exceed this limit, Social Security will withhold $1 for every $2 you exceed. If you are starting your benefits mid-year and have already gone over the earnings limit, but continue to plan to work for less money, there is also an option to use the monthly limit. The monthly limit is $2,040. However, if you exceed the monthly limit by as little as $1, Social Security will require the return of that month’s entire payment.

In the year you reach your FRA, you are allowed to earn substantially more before the month you reach your FRA. The limit for 2026 is $65,160, and it ends in the month you reach your FRA. If you go over the limit Social Security will withhold $1 for every $3 you exceed.
