The Paid Family Leave Debate: The Freedom for Families Act

As the debate on approaches to resolving the paid family leave issue for families birthing or adopting continues, several House Republicans have developed proposals for addressing the issue. One such proposal introduces the possibility of using Health Savings Accounts as a funding mechanism. According to comments in a post on ijr.com, “The Freedom for Families Act would make it easier for families to prepare for the birth of their child by allowing them to set up a health savings account (HSA) where they could set aside money, tax-free, to prepare for the time they will spend away from work when the child is born.”
