The Psychology of Retirement…And Why So Many Don’t

In today’s economy, many folks looking ahead to retirement realize that finances may dictate a longer stint in the workforce. Perhaps the “nest egg” isn’t what it needs to be, or the work record doesn’t provide a substantial enough Social Security benefit. But beyond the financial implications of stepping away from the workplace, it seems there are other factors, perhaps emotional, that introduce a desire to forego the desire to retire. A recent Harvard Business Review article by Teresa M. Amabile explores these factors, which include leaving a comfortable identity behind, dealing with a loss of purpose, and the loss of strong relationships built over a long career. Ms. Amabile’s article draws on the results of a study (Retiring: Creating a Life That Works for You), and focuses attention on longevity in the workplace and the national conversation on age.
