The Social Security “Direct Express” card is changing - AL.com
Although most American’s received their monthly Social Security (and Supplemental Security Income, or SSI) payments by direct deposit into their personal banking account, there are about 3.6 million beneficiaries who use the Direct Express card to receive their monthly benefits. The Direct Express card is essentially a debit card which can be used nearly everywhere to buy nearly anything. The card provides an easy way for some American’s (mostly those who do have have a regular bank account) to receive their monthly Social Security payment in a way which provides easy access to their Social Security money. This program has worked well for a number of years, but the Direct Express program is now changing. That change, however, doesn’t really affect how the program works; only changes the physical card itself and which bank handles it, as explained in this timely article by Leada Gore at AL.com (Alabama news).
