The Social Security Administration calculates the COLA by comparing the average of the CPI-W for July, August, and September of the previous year with the average for the same three-month period in the current year. The percentage change is the COLA for the following year. So why is this important? The current annual inflation rate for the US at the end of March was 3.5 percent; the next inflation update will be on May 15th.  Adam Levy explains several reasons why the 2025 Social Security COLA may not be enough for seniors to keep up with inflation.
