Veterans need to be aware that even though they are eligible for Veterans Disability benefits, the rules for Social Security Disability benefits are different.
Veterans with a VA compensation rating of 100% permanent and total (P&T) may receive expedited processing of their SS disability benefits applications. A VA compensation rating of 100% P&T does not guarantee that you will receive SS disability benefits. To be approved for SS benefits, you must meet SS’s definition of “disability.” The two programs, processes, and criteria for receiving benefits differ significantly.
To receive expedited processing, you must identify yourself as a “veteran rated 100% P&T” when you apply for benefits.
- If you apply in person or over the phone, please tell the SS representative that you are a veteran rated 100% P&T.
- If you apply online, please enter “Veteran 100% P&T” in the “Remarks” section of the application so that SS can identify you and expedite your application.
- Provide your VA Notification letter, which verifies your 100% P&T rating, to SS.
