Waiting to claim benefits can be a very smart move

The rules are actually pretty simple – claiming Social Security before your full retirement age will result in a cut in benefits, and delaying past your full retirement age (FRA) will get you a bigger benefit for the rest of your life. But, is it always smart to delay your claim?  Well, no, because there are often valid reasons for collecting Social Security earlier than your FRA. But there are also some pretty good reasons to wait if you can, especially if you’re in good health and expect at least average longevity.
