Q & A

What is the government doing about (Medicare Fraud)?

AnswerThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the agency that administers the federal health-insurance program for the elderly and disabled, has been working to crack down on the problem of fraud. Enrollment moratoriums were instituted for “high risk” providers in targeted areas, for instance, and the agency launched a predictive-analysis data system that scans fee-for-service claims for suspect behavior. Last year, the new data system generated leads for 469 new investigations, while identifying or preventing $211 million in improper payments—nearly double its first year, but still tiny compared with the estimated tens of billions lost.
