White House Reiterates Pledge to Avoid Social Security Cuts
In the wake of Elon Musk’s public comments about focusing on “entitlement” programs as cost-cutting targets, the White House issued a press release stating that “The Trump Administration will not cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits.” The press release, which you can read in full here, offered clarification of Musk’s comments and his emphasis on “waste and fraud,” and included references to Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports of Medicare and Medicaid fraud. The press release also cites the effects of improper payments on government spending, a portion of which ($72 billion between 2015 and 2022) is explicitly related to Social security. The Social Security overpayment issue, of course, is currently in the news as SSA re-launches its full clawback policy ( see related article here).
