Women Tend to be More Dependent on Social Security Than Men - Money - usnews.com

Women often stay home to raise children or care for ailing family members. They also tend to live longer than men, approximately 5 years. Women have come a long way in advancing their careers, but they still tend to earn less than men, earning only approximately 83% of a man’s salary.

These factors—lower average earnings and longer lifespans—mean that women have less to save or invest, resulting in greater reliance on Social Security than men. Additionally, married women may qualify for higher Social Security benefits through spousal or survivor options, and even ex-spouses married for at least 10 years may be eligible. If you are single and never married, you are dependent solely on yourself.
