You can’t live comfortably on Social Security alone

With an average annual benefit of about $17,000, the average recipient cannot live comfortably on Social Security alone. After all, Social Security was never intended to replace any more than 40% of your pre-retirement income, and most financial planners will say you’ll need 80% or more of your pre-retirement income to live comfortably. But there are things you can do to make sure your Social Security is the most that it can be, especially by making sure that all 35 of the years used to compute your benefit contain earnings and by acting now to boost your retirement savings.
