Your Share of Costs with Medicare - U.S. News

Far from being a free healthcare benefit, the standard Medicare program has deductibles and only pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amounts for services Medicare covers. Those deductibles and the extra 20% “copays” are your responsibility, and many Americans choose to obtain additional healthcare coverage to protect themselves from those extra costs. There are also plenty of rules which govern how much, and for how long, Medicare will pay for various healthcare services, and there are even some healthcare services which Medicare won’t cover. The point is, although Medicare is one of our nation’s most important programs, there numerous things you may still need to pay for on your own – unless you have other coverage such as a “Medigap” supplement plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan which picks up those extra expenses.
