2027 COLA Watch: Be Careful What You Wish For - The Motley Fool

Earlier this week, we published an update on the projections for 2027’s Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), noting that pundits seem to be zeroing in on a range of 3.4% to 3.6%. An adjustment of that size would, of course, be a substantial increase over the average for the three prior years, but does that make it a “good thing?” The Motley Fool’s Maurie Backman, in a follow-up post on their website, suggests that “Large COLAs aren’t actually the gift you might think they are” (although in the context of aggregated lost purchasing power seniors face, an adjustment of that size might not be viewed by many as “large”).

In any event, the march toward October’s COLA announcement continues, so you can expect to see more insights in the coming weeks. For now, you can read Ms. Backman’s latest observations here
