Adding up Social Security

There are many variables that go in to calculating your Social Security benefit checks, some far from obvious. The first thing to know about how Social Security is calculated is that it takes in to account your 35 highest-earning years over your whole career. Even in these 35 years, there is an extra formula that is used to figure out the maximum that counts towards your Social Security.
