Changes to Medicare rules will benefit “high need” patients
New Medicare regulations going into effect on January 1st should inure to the benefit of “high need” patients who require a more coordinated level of care. Physicians have long lamented that Medicare doesn’t reimburse them for their extra time collaborating with other patient care-givers such as pharmacists, social workers and psychiatrists. This may have resulted in some limiting the amount of time they were able to spend in those activities. With the new rules, Medicare will be more generous in compensating for those activities, which will hopefully result in better out-comes for chronically ill older patients and may even encourage more physicians to consider family practice or geriatrics as their specialty.
