Social Security scams and how to avoid them
There is probably no end to the number of nefarious schemes to bilk seniors out of money, and your Social Security benefits are a prime target. The latest is a recorded call from someone purporting to be from the Inspector General’s office saying your Social Security benefits have been suspended and to call a special number to resolve the issue. Of course, that call will go to a scammer who’s goal is to get your personal information or even try to collect “advanced fees”. Don’t fall for this scam! As this article by Social Security’s Jim Borland advises, Social Security never solicits your personal information over the phone or by email, and never asks for advanced fees. A special website has been set up by the Inspector General’s office about this scam. Click here to read more.
