Back in the “good old days”, identity theft was mainly credit card fraud. Most people thought, and even today still think, that their Social Security number was and is their own personal secret identification number, and as long as they are prudent about who they give it to they are at little risk. Well, those days are pretty much over. Social Security numbers have become a primary identification method for banks, healthcare providers, utility companies and the like, and you are probably asked for it numerous times per year, so that number is far from being secret.
