Singles disadvantaged when it comes to Social Security

While many people enjoy the single life, when it comes to arriving at the doorstep of retirement many find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to their Social Security benefit.  Over 40% of singles over age 65 depend on Social Security for about 90% of their income, but being single also usually means less in Social Security benefits than that enjoyed by a couple.  While both in the couple can collect benefits, even if one of them hasn’t worked throughout their lifetime, single seniors only have that one Social Security check to rely on.  This Motley Fool article by Maurie Backman offers some help by suggesting several ways that singles can make their benefit amount a little bigger.  Click here to read more.
