Thoughts on Social Security as an “investment”
While it’s certainly not an “investment” in the traditional sense, viewing Social Security through the lens of a financial planner and comparing those “returns” to more traditional investment vehicles affords one a better understanding of the true value of this program which has become the mainstay for the retirement dreams of nearly all Americans. Indeed, Social Security yields the equivalent of a 5.7% rate of return, which is only slightly less that the average return for most 401(k)’s.
