Time for a change: Social Security numbers shouldn’t be used for identification
The Social Security Number, originally intended to be an identifier only for government transactions, has evolved into being a general method of identification used for a myriad of other purposes. And this is a root cause of why about $16.8 billion dollars worth of identity theft scams occurred last year. It’s estimated that as much as 80% of American Social Security numbers have been stolen by hackers, so it’s time, according to this Nextgov article by correspondent Jack Corrigan, that Congress admits that Social Security numbers are no longer secret and explore different, more technologically advanced ways of identifying who you are.
