Social Security Reform: The Conversation Must Start Now!

In an article recapping sentiments expressed at a Capitol Hill pubic education session conducted by Funding Our Future, Investment News contributing editor Mary Beth Franklin stressed that the time is at hand to start the serious conversation needed to reform Social Security. In addition to outlining the solvency issue faced by Social Security, Ms. Franklin reported on comments from panelists participating in the session calling for a movement to “get the political will on Capitol Hill to initiate and implement the solution necessary to save Social Security to improve retirement security for all Americans.”

Funding Our Future describes itself as “an alliance of organizations dedicated to making a secure retirement possible for all Americans.
The alliance informs the public about the barriers to retirement security and calls on policymakers to make strengthening retirement policies a top priority.” Their recent event, titled “Planning for 75 at 25: Saving for Retirement and How Policy Affects You,” focused on how younger workers can better prepare for retirement and addressed public policy issues and their potential impact on future retirees.

In her post, Ms. Franklin stresses the need for urgency in addressing reform of Social Security, and covers some basic thoughts on corrective measures that can be taken to resolve the solvency problem. The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) likewise recognizes this need for urgency, and is resolved to do its part to call for action on this very serious problem. AMAC has been aggressively promoting a legislative framework that, with modest adjustments, could secure the program’s future for generations to come.
